Lake Malawi
contains a greater variety of indigenous species of
Cichlid fishes than any other lake in the world. World
Wildlife Fund researchers have identified over 500 species
to date that are not found anywhere else in the world.
That is more than all of the freshwater species found
in all the waters of both Europe and North America.
The cichlid fishes of Lake Malawi have been crudely
lumped into three main groups: Mbuna (pronounced "um-boo-na"),
Haplochromines, and Peacocks. |
